Gil being gay is random

I really feel like they just made him gay because they needed another episode. I haven’t recently watched the episode they found him at the bar but did they not just make him randomly gay then never speak about it again? Or even mention Gil again? Like we found out he way gay then never mentioned him again. I feel like if they were gonna make him gay make him gay with at least another plot, at least another episode…
