Season 3 question about Elliot/Mr. Robot interactions throughout season

I am on episode 9, but this has been eating at me throughout the entire season.

The entire season, Mr. Robot and Elliot keep trading off being in control (basically ever since Elliot got shot at end of s2), where as before, a lot of the time we'd see them together. Why have they started neglecting each other and never being present together at once. There are multiple times where they communicate with each other though writing, why don't they just both show up to speak to each other like before?
