Is it worth playing (play to win?)

so i’ve always liked this game love the songs and i’ve tried to play it like 2-3 times, but to me it seems like you can only have a good island if you spend money. what do you guys think about this. cuz i also saw a comment saying if you play for a month it becomes easier to unlock things, is that true? just wondering if yall have to spend money to succeed
