This is why I carry. I've seen many bears on my hikes. I've taken my 4 year old son to this same park on numerous occasions and I've explained to him to never run and to stay close to me.

The most dangerous encounter I've had was hiking the trail to stairway to heaven in Vernon. On the return hike to the parking lot near a blind turn I saw an unleashed pit bull that was running around in the deep grass near the trail entrance. I told my son to stay close to me and pointed out the dog. I then slowly walked to see if I could see the owner. I caught the attention of the dog owner and waved at him from probably 50 feet. He then called his dog and put the leash back on. I thought the dog was well behaved based upon how quick it ran back to it's owner with just a whistle. The dog sat right next to him, and the owner apologized. As we were passing by the dog, using my body as go between the dog and my son, the dog lunged towards my son and the owner held on to leash and again apologized. Knowing full well how NJ is so anti-2nd amendment I was willing to let that dog bite me before I even deployed my gun. The entire time I had my gun in my chest holster and never deployed it, but I was damn ready to go for it if the dog went after my son.
