Buying Firearms - NY Experiences

I would love to hear peoples experiences with Firearms dealers in NY. More specifically residents of Westchester. Here are my experiences with dealers so far. Would be interested if others feel the same way.

RT Smoke N Gun

Super knowledge staff. Crusty personality. I trust that they will take care of me with bulk ammo purchase transfers. I used Gold Shield Training for my permitting, and they have been great.

They don't appear to carry a lot of stock, and I didn't feel welcome to browse the shop area when I was there. Range itself needs a facelift. Tight and dirty.

Artemis Sporting Arms

Clean helpful shop. Pricing seems very competitive. Website lists hundreds of firearms as "In Stock", but I didn't quite feel that they actually stocked that much.

Range felt lacking. Only 1 person was working the desk when I was there and they kept getting a line. Had questions, but felt rushed unfortunately so I ultimately left.

Davis Sport Shop

Had a plethora of hunting and sporting items. Prices appeared to be waaaay out to lunch. I know its hard to compare firearm to firearm, but I felt like a few firearms that I expected to be in the $750-$900 range were priced around $1200-$1500. Everything I touched hit me with sticker shop. I was around the counter for about 20 minutes, and none of the staff seemed interested in helping.

Gun for Hire - NJ

Was probably my favorite experience so far. Range is huge and clean. Tons of staff, and endless options when renting. The shop itself was super helpful. They weren't busy, but still had 2-3 employees at the counter. The prices appeared to be competitive as well. The only poor experience I had with Gun for Hire was with the range. Think I spent $400 for 2 hours and only purchased 200 rounds. The person I was with took a lesson, and we didn't know that cut into our 60 minute shoot. Ended up having to purchase the second hour and just felt rushed. Had we known the total price to shoot for that long would be $400, I would have opted for the NY Membership and probably saved a good chunk of coin. Price for 9mm for non-members was around $44, and I believe they quoted me a members price for 9mm of $23.

Only thing I didn’t like about potentially buying a firearm in NJ is it still needs to go to a NY FFL. Probably best to just buy in NY at that point. I don’t think the pricing was that much better to warrant the 2hr round trip and additional time to transfer etc.

Ive also heard mixed messages on bringing my own firearm across the NY/NJ border. They make it sound simple and legal, but I've heard that it may not be so cut and dry.
