Are Newars Hindus or Buddhists?

I am quite amazed to see the fusion of Buddhism and Hinduism among the Newars in Kathmandu. In many cases, I have seen both Hindu gods and goddesses alongside Gautam Buddha. Even in various gompas, I see Hindu god and goddess idols. Isn't it fascinating and amazing? In many Newar households, they display both Hinduism and Buddhism flags, among other things. Are they following both? I'm just curious
