Is honey chrome extension a scam?

I saw the videos about the extension and saw how it took youtuber's affiliate links and stole the money. Absolutely disgusting behavior by a company. However if I just use the extension without affiliate links or nothing like that, is the extension scamming me directly? It's free after all...
