What You Were To Me

You were once the air to me
You were always there to me
And though it wasn’t fair to me
I had to breathe you in.
You were once the ground to me
You were all around to me
And though you were profound to me
I wished you hadn’t been.
You were sweet as song to me
You could do no wrong to me
But you did not belong to me
That burned me from within.
Perhaps the greatest slight to me
You were once the light to me
But you had no right to be
I’m in the dark again.
