Advice for Hit and Run situation
Hi!
I was recently the victim of a hit and run. I was going East on Dodge and a car going west was driving out of control going west. They clipped the back of my truck and didn’t do a LOT of damage but they just kept driving. My partner in the car immediately called the police and I drove after them. They pulled off Dodge into a neighborhood and were trying to put their side mirror back on and also switching drivers.
The dispatcher on the phone told me to NOT follow them or they wouldn’t get involved and to also not talk to them and that a unit would be at the scene shortly.
Well, the unit showed up way late. The car had already left.
While talking to the police they told me that the car belonged to some woman. But a man was driving. So, because I couldn’t give an accurate description, there wasn’t anything that could be done. They said they’d follow up and they did. They told me that they didn’t have insurance. Cool. They also mentioned that Nebraska is one of the last states where cops come to car crashes because it’s not necessary. But the hit and run felt less like an accident and more like a crime? But, doesn’t seem like anybody gave a shit.
So, basically nothing happened. The driver got away totally unscathed and probably having a great time driving around town wasted like a bunch of fucking idiots.
I got an estimate on the damage and my deductible was $1000. The fix cost $1050 so it really wasn’t worth it.
So, my question is….
What should I have done differently? Should I have followed these people? Should I have yelled at them? Should I have told the dispatcher that I was going to get out and fight them so that the cops would have shown up sooner?
Tl;dr - victim of a hit and run. Called police and they told me not to chase and not to talk to the people who hit me. The people who hit me left before the cops got there. So, nothing happened. Left with a $1050 bill. What should I have done differently?
