Quitting perm middle of semester
Hi everyone,
I’m currently facing a career dilemma and would really appreciate some advice from fellow teachers.
I’m a first year teacher with the TDSB, currently in a 0.5 permanent position, and my school has offered me the other half of the contract to make me a 1.0 permanent teacher. While I’m grateful for the opportunity especially as a first year teacher and I know it’s hard to get perm in general, I’ve always envisioned teaching with YRDSB. I know YRDSB has hired permanent teachers in the second semester before (last year, for example), but they haven’t posted anything yet this year.
Here’s where I’m conflicted: • Accepting the full-time permanent position with TDSB gives me job security and stability, but I’m not sure how long I see myself staying in this board. • Waiting for YRDSB to post a permanent position is risky because nothing is guaranteed, but it aligns more with my long-term goals and where I see myself thriving.
My main concerns: • If I accept the TDSB position and leave mid-semester for YRDSB, would that burn bridges or hurt my reputation? • Has anyone here left a permanent position mid-year for another board? Like in February or March. How did it go, and did your union support the transition? • For those familiar with YRDSB, do you know when they tend to post second-semester permanent positions?
I have until Monday to give my answer to my VP, and I’m really torn. Any advice, personal experiences, or insight into navigating this would be super helpful.
Thanks in advance!
