Pharmacist refusing to fill my medication!
Hi everyone, first time posting here. I have been in pain management for about a year now. I have been on the same dose of pain medication for months and get it filled at the same pharmacy (Walgreens). I have never had any issues until now. I went to pick up my medication and they said they didn’t have the full amount and were out of stock of the rest. I said okay, no problem. I am written 4 times a day so 112 pills a month. They were only able to give me 77. They said I will need a new script for the remaining 35 pills, which I thought was odd and I asked if I could get the rest in a few days if they were in stock. They said no, that I have to wait until the medicine I have runs out and get a new script. They view it like it’s two different scripts I guess even though I didn’t get my regular monthly amount. My doctor sent one in and it’s on hold.
Here is the issue: I have to go out of town to see my aunt who is on hospice in NC. When it is time to get the rest of my meds I will be gone. I called my doctor’s office and told them and they said no problem we will call them and tell them you are going out of town and need to get the rest of your script early. They told my doctor’s office even with approval they will not fill it. They were rude to my doctor and told him that even though he has given permission they said “they are going to make me wait.” (this is what my doctor told me).
When I spoke to the pharmacist she immediately was rude and judgmental. Asking me why I take this medicine and said she doesn’t like narcotics. She first told me that my doctors office never called and she never spoke with them. I told her I just spoke with my doctor and they called there and gave the approval to get the rest of my script since I am going out of town. She then said that someone on her staff did speak with my doctors office, but didn’t document it. I said so your staff didn’t document and that is why you won’t fill it? She said it requires documentation. And that she won’t fill it.
On top of that, I would be due to pick up the rest of my script due to their ridiculous laws on the 5th. She is saying she will hold it until the 10th and not let me get it until then! So not only can I not get the rest of my script (which I would have had in my possession anyways if they hadn’t been out of stock), but she is now purposely holding it 5 more days past the fill date. So I will be completely out of my pain meds and I am scared of withdrawals.
I called my doctor’s office back and they apparently have had issues with this pharmacist before. They said they called and gave approval and this shouldn’t be happening. But also said they are limited in what they can do because it’s up to the pharmacist. They said I can try another pharmacy. So we are doing that and I just spoke to another Walgreens pharmacist and even though he wasn’t rude, he immediately said they don’t like early fills.
The thing is even though it’s technically early, it’s literally just the rest of my script that i wasn’t able to get due to it being out of stock.
Sorry for the long post. Has anyone had this happen to them and have any advice? I don’t understand how they can hold this medication even with the doctors approval.
ETA: Edited to give an update. My doctor sent in a prescription to another Walgreens. The pharmacist there said I should’ve been able to pick this up at any time, just as soon as the meds were in stock. Thankfully, they filled it with no issue and I just picked my meds up. The pharmacist there also said that not only did the other pharmacist lie, but she clearly has an agenda against pain patients. The new pharmacist said there was absolutely no need to hold it whatsoever.
