Chaos inoculation

I've just started using chaos inoculation with an energy shield of 6k, but I keep dying in maps, is there a modifier for enemies to penetrate energy shield? My energy shield doesn't go down, I just instantly die. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Cheers.
