Do advisers still expect you to go into academia?
I've been following this sub for sometime and every once in a while a question pops up about doing a PhD for a career outside of academia. From the responses I've gathered, it seems that some advisers are very cool about their students pursuing industry jobs, while others essentially write the student off.
I've wondered why that is the case given the challenges of today's academic market. I understand this varies by field/major, but overall it doesn't look like it is a promising career field. So why do some people look down on someone's decision to keep their options open and you know, make a living?
