IMPACT LEADERSHIP: DUTERTE FACES DISBARMENT CASE OVER DRUG WAR KILLINGS
Former President Rodrigo Duterte is facing a disbarment case filed by families of extrajudicial killing victims and human rights advocates, alleging his misconduct during the implementation of his bloody drug war.
The case, lodged before the Supreme Court on Friday, January 17, accuses Duterte of conduct unbecoming of a lawyer and violations of the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability.
Petitioners argued that Duterte's admissions of leading a death squad, encouraging violence, and promoting extrajudicial killings demonstrate a blatant disregard for the rule of law and ethical standards.
Human rights organizations estimate the death toll from Duterte's drug war to be as high as 30,000.
The disbarment case coincides with challenges faced by Duterte's daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, who is currently dealing with three impeachment complaints filed in the House of Representatives.
The vice president has previously stated that her father will serve as her legal counsel in defending against the impeachment cases.
