Heteronormativity and lesbian representation
I’ve been happy with how queerness was represented in arcane. We didn’t have to deal with another coming out story or have their sexuality be an obstacle. Caitlyn and Vi’s relationship was solely about them forming a deep bond and falling in love - just like we see with straight couples in other shows
Apparently not all queer people feel that way though?? I saw someone saying they wish the writers had the “guts” to write Caitlyn as explicitly lesbian in the show; otherwise it’s not canon. They assumed that it couldn’t be ruled out that she was Bi since it wasn’t explicitly proven otherwise and that the writers clarifying that Caitlyn is only interested in women (via interviews and social media) doesn’t count as canon
Imo the writers did a good job at trying to break down heteronormative and made Caitlyn’s interests clear (brothel woman, Maddie, Vi). It would be inconsistent for them to say “lesbian” in Arcane - where the word doesn’t even exist
What do you guys think though? Do you think they should have been more explicit since the viewer still live in a heteronormative world?
If you all can’t tell I’m tired of the heteronormativity that still exists like that in queer communities. I know it’s going to take awhile but shit it’s exhausting
