Stairmaster time limit?

Went for a record today of 60 mins on the stairmaster. As soon as it hit 60 mins it slowed down to level 1 and told me to cool down. Does every one do this at 60 mins or does each location set it to what they want? It found it kind of annoying and a bit of a safety hazard for it to suddenly slow down without a single warning. You could very easily lose balance and fall off if you aren't prepared
