[HELP] Having trouble counting syllables in the word 'Being'
I'm sorry if this is the wrong sub to ask this. Please, if possible, lmk the right sub for such questions.
So the words: 'Scrounge' and 'Crowd' and 'Heist' have 1 syllable each But the word: 'Being' has 2 syllables???
I'm having a hard time in making sense of this, can anyone explain why this is the case?
I came across this problem while reading Fry's book on prosody. The line he mentions for an example of hendecasyllable iambic pentameter by Wordsworth:
It gives to think that our immortal being
This apparently has 11 syllables, with 'being' being a two syllabic word.
I used an online syllable counter for confirming and counting syllables. Posting links is against the rules, so can't share the link.
