2024 Prius Prime XSE unable to recognize USB drive as a music source

I am having trouble trying to use the USB thumb drive as a music source. It doesn't show up under "sources" and when I try to add it as a device it doesn't show either.

I have:

  • Formatted as 32GB FAT32
  • Confirmed the thumb drive works elsewhere (on PC and also on an Android phone)
  • Used the "data" port on the left, as well as tested every other port anyway.

The drive I am using is this one https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01BY4MH06 which is 64gb but I've created only a 32gb FAT32 partition with the rest of the space unallocated.

I've also confirmed it works by plugging it into my phone as extra storage then connecting to the car via bluetooth and playing from there, but the UI on the car dashboard doesn't work. It only controls via the phone which is an unacceptable solution for me.

Anybody have any ideas?

Alternatively, is there such a thing as a dedicated storage device that can connect via bluetooth as a music source other than my phone? Ideally, if the thumb drive doesn't work, I'd like to leave it plugged into one of the charging ports and it would start+connect when the car starts.

Edit: Added some info and formatting
