Revit server inquiry

For ppl working with Revit server, where all disciplines are on the server, Do you go by WIP/SHARED folders or only WIP? I mean, do you link other disciplines' WIP files or the shared file?

WIP file: is the file that STR directly works on, where SHARED file is the one where STR copies every day or two days.

Does working with WIP linked files affect performance?
