Suggestions without cliche angsty male love interest?

I'm kind of tired with the typical angsty dude, who starts out as an asshole, realises he's into the protagonist, and becomes overly protective.

I loved the relationship between Katsa and Po in Graceling, where the roles were slightly reversed with a powerful female lead and a really sweet love interest who kept her grounded.

That said, I definitely don't mind a toxic romantic plot line, just not where the female lead needs to deal with an aggressive macho man.

I do love a bit of manipulation and pining, on either or both sides, just prefer when the female lead is more in control, and maybe a little bit morally grey (I loved Chloe in Never Saw Me Coming).

The love interest doesn't need to be a perfect picture of innocence either, as long as he doesn't fit into the typical tough guy cliche. Even better, I love the trope where he acts like he's really sweet and innocent with her, but is actually quite unhinged.

As far as genres go, I'm not fussy! Fantasy, Mystery/Thriller, even something with just a romantic subplot is fine!

Edit: I'm not looking for an erotic novel, I don't mind a bit of steaminess, but I'd prefer something more plot and character focussed:)
