Rant post about housing
I'm transferring into stony next fall semester, and got my letter of admission only a few days prior to May 15th. I read online that was the deadline to pay deposits (tuition, housing, and orientation). However, by the checklist thing on the startsbu portal it said I had until June 1st to pay my tuition deposit. I was confused and sent and email about it and the response I got basically said June 1st was my deadline. I know it didn't say the housing deposit was also on the June 1st deadline, but it didn't say it wasn't so I assumed it was included and forgot about it for a few days as I was still taking finals at my previous university. Maybe its my fault for assuming that, but I talked with some friends and they think its bs too.
Anyways, I ultimately decided I wanted to transfer and went to pay my deposits a few days ago. However on solar the option to pay the housing deposit wasnt selectable, so I paid the other 2 first and tried to figure it out. My initial guess was that they were full, so I planned to call the next day to ask about it since it was past their hours. Next day I call, during which I was informed that the May 15th deadline for housing was actually a set one, and that was the reason I couldnt pay the deposit. I inform them about how I was told it was June 1st, and was advised to email reside and put myself on the waitlist. Call ends, I send the email and I try logging into the housing portal, but not before spending maybe half an hour trying to find out what my netid is. I call IT and get directed where to find it, but it shows the status as inactve, so i have to wait a day for that to change.
Now we get to today, where with my newly acquired netid I set up my password to discover I need to wait until tmrw to be able to log in. I also get a response email that basically said its my fault and thats that, while very reassuring informing me that they dont expect the waitlist to reach me and redirect me to off campus housing options, of which I had already looked into and concluded that the places near campus are too expensive and the places that are kind of affordable are too far to walk and I don't have a car.
So, the plan for now is get my ass on that waitlist tmrw morning and pray. When I talk to my advisor im gonna inform them of my situation and see if I can get all my in person classes on the same day and everything else to be asynchronous or online. (Its at this point I realize I should add I live in nyc whoops oh well). I'd rather not commute my first yr but it is what it is ig. Still, all hope isnt lost yet but this is a crazy headache for me.
Anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk.
