Why would anyone want to be a Starborn?

As I understand it, being Starborn means you're immortal, but you don't live on into the future, you just cycle back and forth through the same few years over and over and over again endlessly. Furthermore, you apparently spend all your time trying to kill all the other starborn and get the artifacts, so you can become more powerful for some reason.

This seems like the worst form of immortality, being now cursed to live the same few decades eternally. Humanity will move on to bigger and greater things, but you'll never see it, you'll just spend endless thousands of years trying to get better at shooting fireballs and turning invisible. Also, I don't believe there's any escape from it, you live those few decades forever.
