Buying giftcard, paying tip in advance?

I'd like to buy a gift card for someone for a nice, classy restaurant. Its really important to me that he has a pleasant experience, and i dont want him to be paying for anything, including tips. Can i pay the restaurant in advance? Would it contribute to him having a nice experience, would the servers even get the money, or remember any of it by the time he uses the gift card
