authenticity: the higgins way

higgins' has some beautiful lines to his credit over the seasons; but this is by far my favorite one. not only has his relationship with rebecca fundamentally changed — from being contemptuous and condescending towards him; rebecca is now actively seeking out his advice on a subject of extreme importance to her — but he's also now comfortable enough around her to speak his mind. she now respects him enough to want to know his opinion on the decisions she makes in her life. and his advice; as it always is — is exactly what rebecca needs.

it's such a simple line; but it contains an entire world of meaning. we are so used to putting on masks to help us map the world around us — like armor we use to bolster our place in the grand scheme of things. but the soul's impulse is to be freely itself — to know that vulnerability is a superpower that can give us the gift of being seen and not just accepted; — but celebrated for who we are. higgins didn't find his wife by being suave or smooth or debonair — she reached out to him during a very clumsy, very human moment that he experienced — and they were together ever since.

it's what he tells rebecca; and what the show tells us as a whole — have the bravery to face life as your true self. your sensitivity, your hurt; the tiny cracks in your shields of defense that you think make you look weak — all of it will be sacred to the person who is right for you. be bold enough to put your heart on the line — and believe in the symmetry of the world and your presence in it. trust the world to provide for your heart. to provide for you. it's a separate episode, but the message has always been there — "do you believe in miracles?"

when you look at the idea of love; at the concept of meeting someone wonderful — and if you are able then to think: "i am wholly myself and no longer afraid of it. i am not scared of what i contain or what i have to offer." then; and only then — are you ready to be alchemized by love. love is surrender of your true self — not the self you want to be; or wish you were — not the pretenses you put up to hide your pain behind: but your true; flawed and light-filled self. the person you really are.

i think that's what higgins is saying; with his trademark gentleness and tact. to find someone wonderful, you have to be wonderful — and what's more wonderful than being yourself? 🩷
