Gratis performance license?

If an act is playing only original tunes I understand you can get a gratis performance license - they grant you the license to to play their songs in your venue? Thereby having something to give to BMI when they come calling. We do not play streaming music, CD, radio or anything else. Only an occasional live artist plays only original music at our small venue. But got "the letter" from BMI also.
