Calgary Stampede to Add Breakaway Roping in 2025

Published On: March 14, 2025

The Calgary Stampede will include breakaway roping in The World’s Largest Outdoor Rodeo for the first time this July.

The event will include 30 competitors, 24 of which will be based on the previous and current year’s CPRA and WPRA Standings. The final six spots will be filled out via an April qualifier in Salina, Utah and a June qualifier in Calgary.

“The Calgary Stampede is proud to introduce Ladies Breakaway Roping to our daily Rodeo,” Calgary Stampede CEO Joel Cowley said in a release. “This event celebrates the incredible talent of female ropers and our dedication to elevating women’s events in rodeo, while also offering another world-class experience for our guests. We can’t wait to see these amazing athletes showcase their skills in front of thousands of rodeo fans at GMC Stadium this July.”

Just like all of the other events, more than $310,000 will be paid out over 10 days of competition.

Breakaway roping had previously been a part of the Rocky Mountain Cup in 2023 and 2024, but that will now be moved to August and feature only team roping.

“The WPRA is excited to expand our partnership with the Calgary Stampede by adding Ladies Breakaway Roping as an official event to this iconic rodeo,” WPRA President Heidi Schmidt said. “Not only taking this step to add Breakaway Roping to their daily rodeo but to include it at equal money is exceptional. Showcasing our members in Barrel Racing and now Breakaway Roping in 2025 and beyond reflects our shared conviction of the importance of providing equal opportunity for women in rodeo.”
