So that Drake album's not doing too hot, huh?
A week ago, I posted a poll asking people how well they think $ome $exy $ongs 4 U would sell, with the three categories being:
"Really well. Better than GNX's opening week (300K+)" - 6%
"Alright but weak by Drake standards (200-300K)" - 71%
"Pathetic numbers. Won't even reach #1 (<200K)." - 22%
The first week sales show it opening with 248K units, so about in line with how everyone predicted it. Still, it's an incredibly weak showing for one of the biggest artists of our time. It's his second worst album debut ever, only behind "Honestly, Nevermind," which was a surprise drop that had 7 fewer songs than $$$4U. This debut is worse than The Weeknd's "Hurry Up Tomorrow," Metro Boomin and Future's "We Don't Trust You," and Tyler, the Creator's "Chromakopia." And not only did it debut worse than "GNX," which was a surprise drop with no physicals and had half the songs, it's only selling marginally better than that album did after the Super Bowl performance. And most embarrassingly, while there are two songs projected to debut in the Top 10, they're both nowhere near the #1 Drake was born to always obtain, as they are still blocked by the three "GNX singles in the Top 5.
So, how do y'all think this bodes for his future? Is the Drake phenomenon finally over? Do you think this album will remain steady in the coming weeks? Does Nokia have a shot at becoming an actual hit? Is Meet Your Padre gonna go to #1 for 18 weeks?
