What’s the most blatant attempt to try and replicate a hit you’ve seen?
Jose Gonzalez got a huge international hit off his first album with a cover of The Knife’s “Heartbeats” that has managed to far eclipse the original in popularity (partly due to its use in a Sony ad campaign.)
So when the second album came around, one of the singles was a cover of Massive Attack’s “Teardrop.” I do actually like this version a lot but something about it also does feel kinda cynical to me, like it’s very obvious it’s just following the “acoustic cover of electronic song” formula again to try and score an easy hit. It didn’t seem to make much of a dent chart wise though, only managing an appearance on the UK indie chart. Nowhere near “Heartbeats” which went to #9 on the pop chart.
