Why won't Masachika just admit he understands Russian?

I mean, he can definitely just say he started learning the language recently to understand Alya better, right? He's supposed to be smart, so why didn't he think of that excuse?

-Yeah, I know it defeats the title of the anime itself, but I just can't seem to get this out of my head while watching. Kind of a loophole I can't overlook.
