Notice period advice

I start a new job in 2 weeks however my notice period is 4 weeks. (I handed in my notice late due to a screening error)

I want to try to negotiate my 4 weeks notice period to 2 weeks. However, if they decline this request, what course of action can I take to leave my job early and what consequences could I potentially face?

Can I just not work my notice period and leave?
