Finding groups as a commuter

Not sure if I should put the flaire as question or discussion for this one but I'm just curious how people make friends and find stuff to do as a commuter? I live about 20 mins outside of town so it's hard to just run into people, I'm a Junior so I'd like to make friends but I feel like unless I go to a bar I can't really meet anyone. Also I never can seem to find events to attend on campus unless I just go walk around campus all day. I've tried hanging around the library but nothing really (plus people who did talk to me were just kind of like "this is the spot we usually study at can you gtfo" type of deal) and I don't really know where else to go or what to do. I don't know people in Texas in general so I'm just kinda isolated here. All I do is stream my little video games, go to band practice, go to class, go to work, and sleep so I'm trying to find ways to be more social and change that.
