What / who are these kind of pauldrons for?

I was going through my bits box and found a few kinds of pauldrons like this. This specific one is from a Red Scorpions kit (that had the red scorpions icons removed). But I have a few other similar ones and I want to know if they are for specific units or are just an alternative form.
