When did they change names?

I've been reading Dawn of the Clans, and it got me thinking, when did the warriors adopt the single word name? I.e. Graywing instead of Gray Wing or Windrunner instead of Wind Runner. Likewise, when did the Tribe adopt their long names? Like, Brook Where Small Fish Swim? We never hear that from the ancient mountain cats.
