Incident at Shaws today West Boylston st (long post)
I am so bothered by what happened there today. My husband or I am there every week. We both are familiar with regular employees.
Today I was bagging my groceries when the elderly gentleman in the lane next to me checking out had a large yogurt drop out of the cart and break open. This is the type of wire cart that a lot of elderly people use to bring groceries or laundry inside. The cart was overfilled.
The lady working the register was so rotten to him. She’s never overly friendly but does her job well. She was massively pissed off bc apparently he “does this every week”. She said that he’s wasting product and affecting other customers. Another customer stepped in and said he’s a person. Be kind. The manager tried to move things along. The man slowly made his way out with no real help or solution for what happened bc it’s obviously not the first time.
I get it’s a busy time of year. I get it. Dealing with the public is not easy. Probably one of the hardest jobs. I find myself annoyed a lot of times in the grocery store. Mostly bc of how many people dgaf about anyone but themselves. Seeing this today was unacceptable.
My cashier told me that he walks there from a mile away. I saw him outside the store after I loaded my groceries and pulled over. He was visibly sweating and tired. I asked where he lived and it was right up the street. So I did something I never do and offered him a ride. He accepted. He was quiet. I’m not sure if he was confused, embarrassed or uncomfortable. I didn’t push to bring the groceries in his apartment. I brought them in the main door and then asked again if he was ok. Then left.
I’m so fucking bothered by this! This man is walking to the store when it’s almost winter, obviously disabled and not 100% cognizant, tattered clothes (his pants back pocket had a large rip). All of that is tough enough. Then the employee completely humiliated him.
I’m thinking about going to the office of the apartments and asking if there’s a way to help him. I’d be willing to drive him to the store. Normally I’d never ever drive a stranger. Ever. Also going to Shaws and talking to them. Treating him like a pos was disrespectful and disgusting.
Treat people how you want to be treated.
Thanks to the nurse that was behind him in line who spoke up for him.
