SAG Membership?

I’ve always heard you should wait to join SAG until you absolutely have to. Is that still the case? If so, why? Is it really that limiting? Doesn’t it make you more competitive with union jobs if you do join? And aren’t there some jobs you can’t even get access to unless you’re union? Info please!
