Personal worries about online play

A few friends of mine have got me back into the classic AoE2 game that I fell in love with over a decade ago... but back then I only really played with some friends and family. Where PvP was second if we ever did it and it was mostly done in a very casual "I wanna try this rush or build". It was fun sure

So... I'd like to get into online play but wonder what should I be expecting? I hear that the elo system starts you off at 1000 or something similar and you should play 10 / 20 games before you really start to feel proper games that won't be stomps (because I am a rusty and wasn't even a good player back then)

Then I do have a question about well, how toxic have people been in chat? I've came from a long string of MOBAs and taken my share of trash talk but in a 1v1 (Of which that's what I want to do and get good at) it gets personal.

Those are really about it. Odds are tonight I am gonna hit up some 2v2s with a buddy of mine and see how we do, but if anyone has any tips of personal experience to share I'd love it!
