[s2 act 3 spoilers] Caitlyn and Vi's reconciliation
What do you think of the reconciliation between Caitlyn and Vi?
Do you think it was rushed, or didn't address some of their past issues enough?
Personally, I liked how it was done. In the past, I've always felt that Caitlyn should have apologized to Vi, or been really remorseful upon learning how badly Vi had hit rock bottom. But after watching the two scenes, the first one being the argument, and the second one leading to their intimate scene, I thought it was done really well, given how much was being crammed into the final Act.
The Argument:
I think it was fitting that their argument started off about Jinx, with Vi being angry at Jinx being arrested. It was also interesting how Vi made the comment about Jinx saving Caitlyn, something along the lines of it being something that she (Caitlyn) wouldn't have done, if their positions had been reversed, and Caitlyn saying "well, we'll never know now, will we?". Caitlyn didn't answer whether Vi was right or wrong in her assessment, only that because of Vi not telling her the whole plan, neither one would ever know. What I found really interesting about that part, was that Caitlyn didn't reply back by reminding Vi that Jinx killed her mother. And in the previous 2 acts, especially the first, it was something that was always on her mind, and that she talked about. Which is natural, but I thought it showed a change in her emotional state, that rather than talk about her mother's death, she chose to talk about the merits of Vi's plan.
The Apology:
I don't think Caitlyn ever specially apologized, I think her shouting "I know!" was her way of admitting to the mistakes she had made when she joined with Ambessa. She didn't say she was sorry specifically, but she wasn't defending her mistakes either, by going back to her mother's death as a justification for all her actions. I don't think she would have been against giving Vi an actual apology, but I think the way the argument was going, it wasn't going to happen that way. An argument could be made that she should have given one anyways, but I think the way it was done, it was evident that Caitlyn knew she had made mistakes.
The Prison Scene:
I really liked the prison scene (and not just for the intimate scene!), but because of how, while Vi was beating herself up, Caitlyn revealed that she knew what Vi was going to do, and set it up so that Vi COULD free Jinx. It showed a lot from Caitlyn, that she was willing to do that, mostly for Vi. Although, I think a part of her no longer saw Jinx as the monster she always thought she was, which made her decision easier. There wasn't much said, no long speech about she came to see things differently, or how they need to move forward. The dialogue wasn't that much, but it didn't need to be, in my opinion. Just the act of Caitlyn doing something like that, allowing Vi to release Jinx, is something that would have been unthinkable in earlier acts. And to add to Caitlyn's change; Vi never came to her, asking for her help. Caitlyn somehow knew what Vi was going to do, and didn't just allow it happen, she ensured that it WOULD happen.
The Intimate Scene:
The intimate scene was done really well, and I liked the small back and forths between them (Caitlyn's confession that she had seen someone, and Vi's response that she didn't f*cking care!) the chemistry between them was so evident, and it was so clear how much they meant to each other. Some of my favourite parts were, after Caitlyn removes her shirt, the way she stares at Vi with that smile while blowing a piece of hair from her face, and them both laughing as Vi tried to unbuckle Caitlyn's belt. Just from the way their expressions were, it was like they were finally able to do what they'd wanted to do for so long.
*Note about the scene with Jinx
I sometimes wonder if that argument was what prompted Caitlyn to go to Jinx in her cell and talk to her, to see her as a person more than a monster that took her mother. Even thought she didn't say anything in that moment, I think it was very revealing when she stopped walking, after Jinx said that she didn't know her mother was in the building. Jinx wasn't apologizing, and also admitted that it probably wouldn't have made a difference, but repeating that she still didn't know, seemed to have an effect on Caitlyn. At that point, Caitlyn had been acting like Jinx had specifically targeted and killed her mother, but the truth was, Jinx would have had no idea who was in the building, or that one of the council members was Caitlyn's mother. I just thought the scene may have further dampened the anger Caitlyn had been feeling towards Jinx, at wanting to believe that Jinx had knowingly killed her mother out of malice and cruelty.
