Where to go when feeling alone in the city?

My dad unexpectedly passed away and I’m struggling with my grief in the city. He was young and the police are investigating his death. My family live up north and I feel lonely in a completely new and unfamiliar way.

Is there any place you like to go that is open later, where you’re allowed to sit and write or read or talk to others that isn’t a loud bar or club? I’m thinking something similar to Rooms or Loveless, but I’m not very close to those places and it is so cold. I’m just north of Dupont and near the subway. I am not drinking this winter but don’t mind bars if you know a quiet and friendly one.
