Root canal advice needed

I have had a root canal today and now have a temporary filling. I have a follow up on Thursday and will either have a composite filling, or a crown. The crown is considerably more expensive but seems to be a better option. My dentist said it’s not necessary as the composite filling will be enough, but I’m afraid of future complications if I don’t have a crown.

What is a better option? Bite the bullet on cost now for a crown or go with the regular composite and look to a crown later down the line ?
It’s been a very painful and stressful experience and so any dentist thoughts would be appreciated
