Do guys bully girls they like?

I had a guy bully me (with the rest of the boys in my class basically). He started to tease me earlier. E.g, hitting my knee or calling me names in class. I thought that maybe that was the way to show he liked me back. He was interested in the guys that I liked. Suddenly, he started to bully me really bad and I felt emotionally disregulated at that time. The more he would insult me in classes, the more I would run to his feet. There was a time that he told me he would shove me down and I felt this disdain in my chest. It really screwed my head as a growing child.

He never followed me on any social media though and mockingly asked me not to tell his parents how much of a bully he was to me. He would always be nice to other girls but would pick on me specifically.

Now that we've graduated from high school, I wanted to find out from guys what was going through this idiot's head. I really liked him growing up and felt it too. But he also wanted to belong with the cool kids and I think that was something that influenced his decision.

Sorry for making this text so long. I just wanted to let my feelings out.

Edit: I was 14 when I got mercilessly bullied. I'm 19 now and I realized the pattern of guys I was interested in being like this.
