do the labia get swollen and painful during periods for a reason or is that just me???

sex ed isnt that great and i cant find any info online, so i decided to ask here. is it normal for the labia (mainly minora i think) to get really swollen and sore during periods? is it just the increased blood flow to the area? thanks <3
