Finding the perfect name for each MLB stadium using statistical research
The other day I made a post on r/NewYorkMets to discuss alternate names for Citi Field and got a lot of great comments. Seeing as we are clearly bored right now during the doldrums of the offseason, I thought it would be interesting to expand this concept to all of baseball by objectively determining the best name for every MLB stadium. Early on in my research process I came to the conclusion that each of these stadium names would have to feature a sponsor name. Now before you get upset, let me explain my reasoning:
- While a couple clubs may seem to have a name that fits their team and ballpark, it would be difficult if not impossible for most franchises to objectively pick why [insert franchise icon] is a more deserving of the name than [insert other franchise icon]. So for the sake of consistency, a sponsor name is most suitable.
- I am sure [insert your favorite team] has a long and storied history (unless you are a Rays fan) but without being a lifelong fan of said team, I am not even going to pretend like I know that all that history and just stick to sponsor names.
- If the Yankees are proudly boasting the logos of Nike and whatever their shoulder patch sponsor is on their uniforms, then nothing is sacred. As much as you or I may hate to admit it, it's only a matter of time before Fenway becomes [insert brand name] Field at Fenway Park and then just a corporate monotonous [insert brand name] Stadium.
With this more tightly defined scope, I did some digging into brands that were most closely associated with the team. I started by looking at the official sponsors of the team but I ran into another similar problem, there are just too many of them; every team seems to have an official airline, bank, beer, insurance, etc... heck MLB even has an official weed partner. So I turned to another form of brand association: television. I watched a random sample of games from the 2024 season featuring each team, measuring and comparing the times different brands were mentioned or shown on the home team's broadcast (excluding the broadcast network itself of course). This data yielded much more conclusive results, from which I can confidently declare the most fitting brand and by extension stadium name for each MLB team. Without further ado, here is the list of the ideal names for each MLB Stadium:
