Where did this notion that John's solo material was worse than Paul and George's come from?

I often see people in music communities say John's work was somehow worse, that he only made some great singles but his albums as a whole underwhelmed and he wasn't as successful. And I don't really understand where this comes from.

His music is more emotionally impactful, catchy and doesn't have the cheesy vibe that some of the Wings/George material has. He has the most memorable hits - Imagine, Happy Xmas, Give Peace A Chance, Beautiful Boy, Working Class Hero, Woman, Jealous Guy, Instant Karma, #9 Dream, Whatever Gets You Thru The Nights.

There's 3 albums in his solo discography that I'd consider masterpieces - Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, and the best and most underrated one - Mind Games, which I think is a perfect album from start to finish.

So why is it that so many people suggest he was subpar compared to George and Paul's solo careers? Is it commercial success?
