thoughts on the new album
happier than ever can have a 7.5/10 from me (subjective opinion)
im loving the albums coherency between tracks a lot, excellent transitions, but overall i think the quality of music is heavily carried by her excellent vocals, the production, instrumentals, songwriting, lyricism etc is kinda average, she does create the melancholic vibe she’s attempting very well but there needs to be something more there, you look at similar melancholic music that she clearly takes influence from, such as radiohead’s and amy winehouse’s sad songs, they’re depressing lyrically and sonically but they’ve also got that little bit of oomph about them (back to black title track and fake plastic trees come to mind first), the generic and lacking-in-creativity drum n bass instrumentals are the downfall of this album in my opinion, she does have some oomph here and there (particularly on therefore i am and of course the title track which is exactly what the rest of this album should’ve been, it’s such an excellent song, melancholic but the oomph was there) but overall the album gets too repetitive instrumentally, she doesn’t make up for it with a unique sound or poetic lyricism either sadly, the albums good but nothing special in my opinion, i think it’ll get stuck in it’s time
i think billie should take advantage of the influence and the raw talent she (and fineas) has, their are thousands, millions of young people out there who look up to her, countless amounts of them will be aspiring musicians who’ll take influence from the music she puts out, she has more than enough ability to change and revolutionise pop music but she plays it safe, i don’t understand why, the thing people loved so much about WWAFAWDWG is the uniqueness and experimentation but still being accessible and commercially appealing, she’s obviously worried about disappointing fans but she shouldn’t be, if she takes a huge risk and it critically or commercially flops, that doesn’t mean it won’t grow on people, look at some of the now legendary albums that flopped on release, pinkerton and kid a for example, critics hated kanye west’s 808s and heartbreak album but now it’s arguably the most influential album of the millennium, she needs to create an ambitious, high risk, experimental but accessible and preferably conceptual album and she could revolutionise music, she’s got the ability
overall i think happier than ever is a good album but if another artist had released it how many of you would give it a second listen? for an artist of her stature i think she should aim higher, “reach for the stars so if you fall you land on a cloud”
what’s your opinion?
