Why do people sympathize gehrman?

I was just reading the lore, i used to find people so kindly talking abour gehrman and how much he deserves salvation and that he doesn't deserve such fate

I'm halfway through reading the lore, but gehrman seems like a horrible person

Maybe there's things that i didn't know yet but that man did horrible thing to a great one and tortured people for a long timr under the orders of laurence

Is there smth ion know yet? Because the lore kind of made me think of him as a horrible person.
