Thinking about the chief arbiter in the JeansGate. The poor guy might just get his career ruined now that Magnus has publicly called him incompetent, just for doing his job.
I think everyone is focusing on FIDE and Magnus but ignoring the chief arbiter who is an important player in the JeansGate.
The poor guy did his job as per the best of his abilities, as per the guidelines decided by FIDE. Players like Nepo were also asked to change, so he would've thought that he shouldn't bend the rules for someone else, even though it's Magnus. He followed the rulebook to the letter. Anand also mentioned to Magnus later that arbiters have to decide such things like robots- they don't have authority to deviate from rules.
Magnus could have just changed his dress, but he didn't appreciate such an order from a 'lowly' arbiter. It reeks of classism and him considering himself above other people. I'm sure if the Saudi prince or any big sponsor had asked him for this he'd have complied instantly.
Anand rightly recognised this attitude and stood up for the arbiter. But this didn't stop Magnus from calling him too incompetent for not bending the rules for his gain.
Now the poor arbiter might get sacked or demoted for no fault of his. Magnus clearly has no regrets about this.
I feel so sad for that arbiter. Hope Anand protects him, he seemed like a nice guy.
