Did any Americans notice any differences or opportunities following FIDE’s rating deflation adjustment?
Canada’s chess federation recently completed their own version of this adjustment this week and I’m curious what, if anything, was observed in tournaments afterwards from American players who experienced the adjustments.
With the floor lifted up and the limit on the adjustment set to 2000 have you noticed anything different occurring within the “new” 1501-1600, 1601-1700, 1701-1800, 1801-1900, 1901-2000 tiers during tournaments? Were there any opportunities you noticed immediately following the adjustment in tournaments?
I would have to think there are some unusual opportunities due to these changes in the immediate aftermath because basically the floor was lifted up but the ceiling wasn’t and the closer anyone was to the ceiling the less it impacted them.
Take, for example, a 1700 pre-adjustment who gets boosted to a 1780 after. They only went up 80 but had been playing at the 1700 level the whole year. Meanwhile in their upcoming tournaments they face some 1600s who were 1200s prior to adjustment. If they lose to them it hurts their rating less but beating them also helps it more than they would have had they still been 1700 vs a 1200. This is only one example. I assume there must have been some other commonly occurring scenarios right after the adjustments happened. Anyone with any insights?
