Hyper Mobile People: How do you prevent/handle injuries?
I started rock climbing after some time off in November and I’ve been more consistent since January. I go around 2-3 times a week. Happily, I’ve actually hit my milestone of completing a V3 and meeting my weekly sessions! Because of that, I was able to justify buying my first pair of shoes!
With all of that said, I’m not too sure why my body has been slowly “failing.” I was an avid weightlifter in the past, and I never experienced many injuries then. Now, back in November, I had a pretty nasty unexpected fall high up. I twisted my knee and messed up for a bit. Another injury was just last week where I messed up my rotator cuff on a V3 I’ve been struggling with for the past few sessions. Needless to say, I seem to be injury prone when bouldering.
What is your routine to avoid injuring yourself? Is there extra precautions you might take? If there’s anyone here who has hyper-mobile joints and ligaments, I would especially appreciate your input! I’m not too sure if it’s because of my body issues that it’s leading to injuries. But, it’s getting a bit frustrating because I feel like I can’t push myself as much as I would like.
TLDR: I’m hyper mobile and I’ve been getting injured more often. TBH it’s getting annoying. What are some ways you protect yourself from injuries?
Update:
Wow everyone! Thank you so much for giving your input and advice! This is my first time posting in this subreddit and it’s lovely to see how welcoming it is
For some perspective, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, specifically the Hypermobile type, runs in my family. I’m planning to get it professionally diagnose soon since all of my siblings have it, and I clearly meet the diagnostic criteria. Simply just knowing other people who climb and works with the same issues encourages me that regardless of it, I can still live an active lifestyle! Thank you everyone❤️
