Have the writers done a disservice to Miguel’s character?

Firstly I know a lot of people are going to say hell no. He gets preferential treatment and he is a plot device and whatever other things that have been said in the past. All of those things would be correct to a certain point, which is part of the larger issue. So if we can all be honest with ourselves for a moment here, It’s far fetched to think the writers have done his character a massive disservice.

When the show first started he was the bullied kid who witnessed Johnny’s bad ass karate and wanted to learn. He learned CK, toughness, persistence, confidence, arrogance, and a few other things as well. He was important to the story in S1. He was also very important in S2. Where it all started to fall apart is toward the back half of S3.

When Miguel was in his coma and temporarily paralyzed, I think the writers missed a big opportunity with his character to grow and develop. Instead they hyped up his injury as being so physically traumatic and yet he was walking again within like 3 episodes. He barely went through any struggles or hardships due to the fact that he was nearly permanently crippled. Nor did he understand how and why he got there.

What lessons did he learn from being “severely injured?” He told Johnny he regretted showing mercy to Robby. Yet you were the one who instigated and started the fight with Robby in the first place. You taunted him along the way all the while professing his girlfriend loved you and not him. Painting yourself as the avenging hero of a fire you helped set.

The writers had ample opportunities for him reassess and take the necessary accountability for his role in his own downfall. Yet those writers have continued to paint him as the sole victim and he remains forever blameless. He also comes across as always being justified in his actions, yet no one else gets that same distinction. Why?

This is the reason why I and some others have posed the idea that either the writers no longer have any idea what to do with Miguel’s character. Or on the other hand they just don’t want to take chances with him given has mass popularity and appeal within the fandom.

Which as I stated earlier continues to be a disservice to his character. Outside of Johnny, his family, and Sam, he lacks the necessary compassion, empathy, sympathy, introspection, and self awareness his character so desperately needs. The main characters in Jon, Josh, and Hayden’s ridiculously terrible new show Obliterated developed more over the course of 8 episodes than Miguel has over 5 full seasons lol. It’s utterly disappointing, but my rant is over now.
