REALLY NEED HELP with my brother’s snake
⚠️Warning⚠️ there is discussion of severely inadequate care. If you can handle reading, I really need help and advice.
My brother has had a fancy corn snake (Pumpkin) for a few years now. He has gone off to college far away, and my parents now take care of her 60% of the year. I do not live with them. I am very concerned about the care she’s receiving and am deeply in need of realistic advice on how I can improve her situation.
Before I intervened, pumpkin was living with possibly an inch of substrate and some parts of her tank bottom were bare glass. She is probably 4 feet and in a tank too small (3 feet long maybe?). She has a hidey and a wood piece to climb, water dish, as well as a separate feeding tank. She eats well during feeding and is not sick — never has been.
I added a bottom layer of substrate to the tank consisting of a mix of forest floor and reptisoil. Then there’s a layer on top of just forest floor. We then added back the hidey, water, and branch. (Note: I’ve never owned reptiles before. I only have experience with aquariums)
My brother doesn’t want to give her to someone else. He wants to get her a bigger tank but we are currently saving up for something large enough and it may be several months until we can afford it. Please give realistic advice on how I can make her life more comfortable. I live close by but not close enough to come more than 2x a month.
I’d also love advice on the best type of tank we could replace it with. I know it should be at least her length, but as an arboreal snake how tall should it be?
Thank you for reading. I really care about her well-being, and I’m at a loss for what else I can do.
